Special Education Assistants work directly under the supervision of the Director of Specialized Services. Their most essential function is to support students in meeting their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, increase educationally acceptable behaviors and create a safe, positive learning environment.  They also must demonstrate integrity, respect for diversity, and other standards of ethical conduct.
 
Qualifications
  • Illinois Paraprofessional Educator License required
  • Minimum two years of study at institution of higher education or associates degree
  • Experience in urban schools as a special education assistant or similar experience is desirable
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, parents, and community members
  • Bilingual experience is desirable
 
Job Description & Responsibilities
 
  1. Provide direct instructional support to individual and/or groups of students as directed by licensed teaching staff
  2. Attend designated classes/activities with the student(s), as outlined in the IEP.
  3. Implement modifications and adaptations to the environment or materials as directed by the licensed staff, and assist staff in maintaining charts and other records related to student(s) progress.
  4. Collect data regarding student(s) reaching goals/objectives as directed by licensed staff.
  5. Reinforced academic behaviors taught by licensed staff and provide the student with opportunities to practice.
  6. Assist student in community, recreational, school, and leisure activities under the direction of licensed staff.
  7. Model appropriate pro-social skills, participation, adult behaviors and problem-solving skills.
  8. Assist staff in the management of student behavior by applying proactive strategies when dealing with student behaviors. Implement district approved techniques for verbal de-escalation.
  9. Act as a cooperative team member in working with staff, community and families of students.
  10. Maintain professional district Special Educational Assistant competencies by attending mandatory in-services and workshops.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned and required by the building administration and licensed staff.
